A clean intraoral scan is the foundation of a successful digital restoration. When the scan is accurate, complete and clearly captured, the dental laboratory can design restorations with better fit, contacts, margins and occlusion. Missing areas, unclear margins, saliva interference or bite errors can lead to delays, redesigns, remakes or additional chairside adjustment. For a dental laboratory, a scan is not just a digital file; it is the starting point for every restoration.

Why Scan Quality Matters

In digital dentistry, the laboratory depends on scan data to understand the clinical situation. Unlike physical impressions, intraoral scans must clearly show preparation margins, adjacent teeth, the opposing arch, soft tissue, bite relationship and restorative space.

A clean scan helps the laboratory create a restoration that seats properly, fits accurately and requires minimal adjustment at the clinic.

1. Clear Preparation Margins

The most important part of a laboratory-ready scan is a clearly visible margin. If the margin is unclear, hidden by blood, saliva, gingiva or scan distortion, the laboratory may not be able to design an accurate crown edge.

Before scanning, the preparation area should be clean, dry and properly isolated. Retraction cord, paste or other tissue-management methods may be needed to expose subgingival or equigingival margins.

A good scan should show the full margin line without breaks or blurred areas.

2. Dry and Clean Scanning Field

Moisture is one of the most common causes of scan inaccuracies. Saliva, blood and reflective wet surfaces can create noise or missing scan data.

Before scanning, the tooth surface should be dried properly. The field should be free from bubbles, debris, blood and pooling saliva. This helps the scanner capture accurate tooth anatomy and surface details.

3. Complete Scan of the Prepared and Adjacent Teeth

The opposing arch is essential for occlusal planning. A laboratory-ready scan must include enough opposing teeth to establish the bite relationship.

For single crowns, the laboratory still needs a clear opposing scan to design appropriate occlusal contacts. For bridges, implant crowns, full-mouth cases and aesthetic cases, opposing-arch accuracy becomes even more important.

5. Correct Bite Registration

Even if the preparation scan is clean, an inaccurate bite scan can affect the final restoration. Incorrect bite alignment may lead to high points, open bites or unnecessary occlusal adjustment.

The bite scan should capture stable contact between the upper and lower arches. The patient should close naturally, and the scan should include enough teeth on both sides for reliable alignment.

6. No Missing Data or Holes

A clean intraoral scan should not contain holes, dragged areas, double surfaces or distorted patches. Missing data can affect margins, contacts, occlusion and restoration design.

Before sending the file, the dentist or scanning assistant should review the model from all angles and rescan any incomplete areas.

7. Proper Shade and Case Information

A good scan alone is not enough. The laboratory also needs complete case details such as tooth number, restoration type, material preference, shade, stump shade, clinical photographs for anterior cases, implant details where required and any special instructions.

For anterior crowns and veneers, photographs are especially helpful for assessing shade, translucency, surface texture and smile harmony.
